Apologies for the question marks, as some names have slipped my mind, I
would be greatful if some one could complete the class register! It has
been wonderful to see these old photos from Blythswood School, thank you
for bringing back these memories.

Clara McDowall is fifth from left on back row
I have found this photo in my archives. I have no
idea where it came from. Perhaps someone can help identify. The
janitor is Mr T. MacLachlan and the other male I believe to be Mr
Ballantyne (Wee Bally), but I may be wrong. I think it is from the
late 1940s.

I believe that
on the back row, the first teacher from the left is Miss Gardener.
She was my teacher (I entered the Blythswood School in 1955, I
believe) in my final year there (1960-61). I believe she lived in
Helensburgh. She always wore a hat and used to take it off and sort
her hair in front of the mirror every morning when she came in. We
used to wonder whether or not she wore a wig. She was a great
teacher and had lovely posters around the classroom of far-flung
places which instilled in me a desire to travel, which, I am happy
to say, I have been able to fulfil. She also did beautiful
calligraphy and wrote out all our certificates in lovely script.
The first
teacher on the left on the second row (next to the jannie) is
definitely Mrs Bonar. Her husband had the stationery shop next to
the post office on Hairst Street. They were a lovely couple and
after they left Renfrew they went to live in a small village called
Smailholm, near Kelso. Mrs Bonar was the village schoolmistress.
Some friends and I spent a week there with Mr and Mrs Bonar during
the school holidays.
I believe that
the teacher second from the left in the front row is Mrs McArdle. I
remember her teaching us in her fur coat when the heating was
broken, which seemed to be often.
I believe that
the teacher at the right hand end of the front row was Miss Moffat,
who taught me in my last year of the "wee school" before I moved up
to the "big school" in the two-storey building.
I don't think
that is "Wee Bally" in the front - I recall him as being more
rotund! - I think it might be the Headmaster, Mr Mackay.
I would love to
hear if anyone else has memories of these teachers or can identify
any more.

| Blythswood testimonial school circa 1972
this was primary 4 at that time the school closed shortly afterwards only
a few parts of the school have been left to remind us of a once imposing
building.
